palinode

Instrumentation: bass flute, bass clarinet, cello, 3 object players (all instruments and objects with close up amplification)

Durata: 11'

Premiere: November 10th, 2013 at the Klangwerkstatt Festival in Berlin, Germany, by Ensemble Mosaik, conductor Rei Munakata.

Commission: Composed as part of the Berliner Künstlerprogramm Residency.

Program note: While other cities struggle to keep their historic architectural styles undisturbed, disturbance by change in the urban landscape is Berlin’s way of breathing and staying alive. As a manifestation of this process I have chosen objects from three locations that have recently been going through different kinds of transformations.

The swing: among the new, neat rows of apartment houses in sleepy suburban Rummelsburg, just behind the memorial of the “Penal Institution Berlin 1” that closed in 1990, you can hear the most joyful laughter and excited screams from the heart of the neighbourhood – the playground of the kindergarten with it’s popular swings.

The vase: in Mauerpark the commerce and the street music is fully blossoming during the weekend’s flea market, as the most vital revenge of the past. The beautiful, orange vase stands proudly in the dirty soil among hundreds of pieces of furniture, just waiting to be deliberated for a higher musical purpose…

The metal sculpture: art institution Tacheles is closed. In April 2013 the Metallwerkstatt in the garden was still bursting with activity and production. Just the day before the sculpture park gets its final eviction I receive the sculpture with the fascinating timbres from artist Zeki Turan.

Palinode is the song of a city that is constantly reinventing itself, created by the current states of conscious revitalisation and ease of pressures but also by a hurried flight towards the future bringing new types of friction and conflicts.
